Atticus’ TO-DO list for a family visiting Deerfield Beach/Boca Raton, Florida with a Toddler.

If you’re looking for a laid-back beach town along the southern shores of Florida for you and your littles, look no further than this quaint enclave tucked between Boca Raton and Pompano Beach. Deerfield Beach has an award winning “pristine beach” and many miles of turquoise waters, a beachfront boardwalk, local home-made ice cream parlor and beach souvenir shops that look like they still carry postcards and paraphernalia from the 80’s and 90’s. You can also ditch the car for most of your day-to-day activities (unusual for Florida).

Where to Stay  - In Boca, check into the Boca Raton Resort & Club. Depending on your budget you can book a bungalow, suite or traditional room. All are tasteful, elegant and well appointed. This is afterall a Waldorf Astoria property. Unfortunately the offering’s in Deerfield Beach are a bit more humble. So look for a condo or beach house rental online. We found ours through

Breakfast - Head into Boca for the best bagels at Flakowitz Bagel Inn.  With so many New York snowbirds, this deli means business! Expect lines out the door.

Morning activity - Join the locals and walk the boardwalk along the one-mile stretch of protected beach. If you’re up for it (and your little’s are old enough), try your hand at surfing or boogy boarding.

Lunch - JB’s - a casual beach bar and restaurant right next to the Deerfield Beach Pier. Almost every table in this large restaurant is either right on the beach or has an ocean view. The menu features wood-fired grill favorites and tropical flavors. It’s an easy place to wile away an afternoon or evening with fun cocktail, beer and wine specials and a menu that caters to the kiddies as well as the adults.

Post-nap activity - Hit the beach or take a stroll along the Deerfield Beach Fishing Pier - it’s almost 1000 feet long. Some beautiful photo ops, people watching and even a $15 rod rental if your littles want to try their hand at catching dinner.

Dinner - Bob’s Pizza & Amantes Italian Cuisine - a family run local Italian joint that’s fun for the whole family. Snag a seat outside on the patio and watch village life unfold before you. The American-Italian pizza and pastas are hearty and tasty. The beer is cold and the wine specials might even keep the wine snob in your midst happy, Bob’s Pizza

Adult evening activity - Head to Boca for dinner and a movie. You’re spoiled for choice at Mizner Park - an outdoor pleasant-ville full of fabricated charm and ambiance. Get the VIP movie treatment at IPic Theatres. Purchase tickets online as tickets sell fast over holidays and long weekends.
